Of all opals, the rarest and most precious is the black opal. Nearly 97% of it comes from a single location on the planet, in New South Wales, Australia, specifically from the Lightning Ridge mines. Other important deposits are found in Mexico and Ethiopia.
Over the years, it has become the symbolic stone, first of the state of South Wales, and then of all of Australia. A brand new world!
According to Aboriginal traditions, the genesis of this stone occurred with the descent of the gods to earth. Where they placed their feet, the stones came to life and thus trapped the colors of the rainbow within them.
It is used by both Aboriginal people and Native American shamans to evoke the Vision.
