Dear friends, today we are talking about a very special stone: Selenite, a particular crystallized variety of gypsum, known in chemistry as calcium sulfate dihydrate.
A Bit of History
The name of this crystal comes from Selene, the Goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology.
The stone’s whitish coloration, with its high level of transparency, reflects a pure light comparable to moonlight. Because of these characteristics, it was used by the Greeks as a precursor to glass.
This stone has the particular feature of depositing in layers, forming flakes, rods, or even pillars, such as those found in the Giant Crystal Cave of Naica in Mexico. This cave, discovered by chance in 2000 by some miners, contains enormous Selenite formations (the largest weighs 55 tons and is about 500,000 years old).
Selenite is a delicate crystal: it can easily break or flake and dissolves upon contact with water.
It is abundant worldwide and is one of the few minerals found on every continent. In Italy it is very common in Emilia-Romagna and Sicily, where quarries were already known and used in Roman times.
Selenite in Crystal Healing
In crystal healing, this crystal is associated with the seventh chakra: Sahasrara, or the Crown Chakra, located at the top of the head. It represents the source of our faith, our spirituality, and the origin of universal energy and truth.
When this chakra is in balance, so is our energy.
Selenite is particularly suited to meditation, as it allows us to come into contact with the deepest part of ourselves.
It is closely connected to the Moon, to emotions, and to the feminine (yin). Its energy is associated with women because it represents the mutability of feelings.
This does not mean that the use and beneficial powers of this stone are intended exclusively for women: very often it is men who need “feminine elements” in their lives romanticism, creativity, passion, sensitivity, deep love, and instinct.
This stone comes to our aid, like a friend or an angel, during periods of change when support is needed. Trust in it, and it will help you. It is the stone of tranquility: it brings mental clarity and a deep sense of inner peace, helping us become more flexible and stronger when making important life decisions.
It gently dissolves harmful mental patterns, making room for new perspectives. In this way, it allows us to achieve a certain emotional stability without diminishing our ability to “daydream” and use our imagination.
It helps improve mental abilities such as reasoning about what surrounds us. It is particularly helpful for storing thoughts, increasing wisdom, improving reasoning, and overcoming attention deficits.
It stabilizes mood, helps manage jealousy, and encourages analyzing problems with detachment.
It is also suitable for children, stimulating intuition and creativity during the day, while relaxing and soothing nighttime rest.
The Crystal of Serenity
Selenite is truly a crystal of serenity.
I use this wonderful crystal so fragile and delicate in all my treatments because it represents solidified light. Society, in this historical moment, is not going through an easy period, and it is precisely for this reason that Nature has gifted us this crystal, which has come to the surface to bring clarity.
Selenite offers guidance in moments of despair. It brings light into the deepest darkness.
I strongly recommend this crystal when we know that a difficult time is approaching or when we must face a separation. It is also very useful for those seeking solutions in love, work, or health: place selenite under your pillow when you go to bed.
Being a predominantly nocturnal stone, it promotes peaceful sleep and accompanies vivid and sometimes symbolic dreams.
Physical Benefits and Other Uses
Selenite (especially in its raw form) is also considered an excellent natural anti-inflammatory. It relieves tooth pain, soothes burns, and works on the joints.
It has beneficial effects on the muscular system, making it stronger and more flexible than usual. It is also useful for improving skin tone: the relaxation it provides gives the face a more rested and relaxed appearance, without signs of fatigue (such as crow’s feet or dark circles).
Other beneficial properties attributed to Selenite include hormonal rebalancing, especially during life stages involving significant bodily changes (such as puberty or menopause).
Ancient folk beliefs emphasized the use of this crystal to increase libido.
It also stimulates digestion, supports the health of the stomach and liver, and facilitates the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium and iron.
Because it promotes serenity and rest, all metabolic functions that occur during sleep, under the influence of Selenite, are carried out more effectively.
Selenite is now even used in interior design: there are elegant and original Selenite furnishings, ideal for those who love meditation and for those who wish to be carried away by the positive energy emanated by this crystal.
The soft, relaxing light of Selenite lamps gives home environments an atmosphere of calm, serenity, balance, and even romance.
Over the years, I have given away many pieces of Selenite and will continue to do so, because the world is in great need of peace and serenity.
One of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had was with a client to whom I gifted this wonder six years ago. One day she called me and told me that since she had Selenite with her, everything in her life had changed: it had calmed her, bringing balance and harmony to her days.
It truly gave me immense joy that she called to thank me—this is what makes me understand more and more how much magic lies behind my beautiful and precious crystals, friends for life.
